Goal:

Teach students to play their first notes on the D and A strings using proper finger technique, and apply this skill in simple, familiar melodies.

🎯 Topics Covered:

🎵 1. Notes on the D and A Strings

Students now use the left hand to play specific pitches on open D and A strings.

🎼 On the D String:

🎼 On the A String:

🎯 Emphasize:

  • Correct finger curve and position (on tape if using).

  • Keeping fingers close to the fingerboard.

  • Smooth transitions between fingers.

✅ Tip: Use call-and-response drills: the teacher plays a note, the student copies it by ear.

🧠 Memory Trick for Notes

Help students memorize with short sayings:

  • D string: "D-E-F#-G = 0-1-2-3"

  • A string: "A-B-C#-D = 0-1-2-3"

🎶 2. Play Simple Melodies

Now apply note knowledge to real songs! These pieces use only open strings and the first three fingers, so they’re perfect for beginners.

A–A–E–E | F♯–F♯–E

D–D–C♯–C♯ | B–B–A

✅ This is a great tune to:

  • Practice string crossing

  • Get used to simple patterns that repeat

🛠️ Practice Routine

  1. Warm up with open string long bows

  2. Play note sequences slowly:

    • D–E–F♯–G

    • A–B–C♯–D

  3. Practice short song phrases one line at a time

  4. Clap or sing the rhythm first if needed

💡 Teaching Tips:

  • Use letter name stickers on the fingerboard for visual learners.

  • Let students listen to the song first so they recognize it.

  • Play duets with students — open string drones or simple harmony adds fun!

✅ Outcome by End of Class:

Students should be able to:

  • Play all 8 notes: D–E–F♯–G and A–B–C♯–D

  • Play one or two recognizable songs with correct notes and mostly steady rhythm

  • Combine left and right hands with beginner coordination
