🎻 Class 4: Left Hand Basics

Goal: Introduce students to finger numbers, correct finger placement, and simple exercises using the left hand on each string.

🎯 Topics Covered:

👆 1. Finger Numbers and Placement

Violin uses finger numbers instead of letter names for the left hand:

🎵 The thumb is not numbered but acts as a guide/support behind the neck.

🧭 Proper Finger Placement:

  • Fingers curve naturally, landing on the tips.

  • Knuckles above fingerboard (not collapsed).

  • Keep fingers close to the string, even when not pressing down.

  • Thumb should be lightly touching the side of the neck, roughly across from the 1st finger.

🩹 2. Using Tapes or Markers on the Fingerboard

For beginners, placing tapes or stickers helps guide finger positions until ear training develops.

✅ How to Set Up Tapes:

  1. Use thin tape or violin fingerboard stickers.

  2. Commonly mark:

    • 1st finger

    • High 2nd finger

    • 3rd finger

  3. Place tapes based on tuned ear or digital tuner:

    • Tune open string

    • Press 1st finger to sound correct note (e.g., E on D string), mark that spot

    • Repeat for 2nd and 3rd fingers

🎻 Sample Notes:

On the A string:

  • 1st finger = B

  • 2nd finger = C♯ (high 2)

  • 3rd finger = D

Some teachers add a 4th tape for low 2nd finger (e.g., C natural), but for now, stick to high 2.

🎼 3. Simple Finger Exercises on Each String

These build muscle memory and teach note locations and intonation.

🧪 Exercise 1: Finger Placement Drills

  • Start on the D string

    • D – E (1st finger) – F# (2nd) – G (3rd)

  • Use open string + each finger slowly

  • Say the finger number and note name aloud

🧪 Exercise 2: Finger Taps

  • Without bowing, tap:

    • 1 – 2 – 3 – 2 – 1 – 0

  • Builds awareness of spacing and independence

🧪 Exercise 3: Finger Hold & Release

  • Place all 3 fingers (1, 2, 3) down

  • Lift one at a time while keeping others down

  • Helps with control and preparing for string crossings

🧪 Exercise 4: Finger Walk

  • Walk fingers up and down:

    • 0 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 2 – 1 – 0

  • Try on G, D, A, and E strings

✅ Use a tuner or piano to help students check their intonation.

🎓 Practice Tips for Students:

  • Use a mirror to check left hand shape.

  • Don’t squeeze the neck with the thumb — keep it light.

  • Keep left elbow under the violin (not sticking out).

  • Practice without the bow to build finger agility.
